In the North of Canada, Indigenous Peoples' land is now home to the largest industrial project in the world: the exploitation of the tar sands, the new oil. Local Indigenous Peoples find their lands ransacked by the oil industry while these multinationals draw nearly two million barrels a day, up to five million by 2030. The production of a barrel of crude from Alberta is ten times more energy intensive than a conventional barrel. The pollution created from this process threatens the environment and major climate agreements of the planet, even forcing Canada to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol in order to extract its tar sands. |
